Achieve and Maintain Oral Health with Routine Dental Exams and Cleanings
Dental exams and regular cleanings are the cornerstone of preventative dental care, and are necessary to ensure optimal oral health. When combined with proper at-home care, exams and cleanings can be very effective at preventing oral health issues such as periodontal disease and tooth loss. At Browne Goetz & Miraglia in Mount Kisco, NY, our team recommends scheduling an exam every six months. During these regular exams and cleanings, we can eliminate plaque, prevent decay, and examine your gums, cheeks, lips, and mouth for any early signs of gum disease or oral cancer.
What to Expect
One of our primary goals during your visit is for you to feel at home, welcome, and as comfortable as possible. We understand that some of our patients may be slightly anxious prior to their visit, but our friendly team will ensure that your exam, cleaning, and experience at our office is a positive one. During your appointment, one of our skilled hygienists will use various dental instruments to remove stubborn plaque and tartar from your teeth. Depending on the amount of plaque or tartar, some patients may experience minor discomfort in the gums. Next, minor surface stains may be removed, and then your teeth will be gently polished.
During the examination, we will take a series of digital x-rays, which not only reduce the amount of radiation exposure to our patients, but which can then be examined by our doctors. The x-rays will give us a better view of your tooth roots, any existing restorations such as implants or crowns, and help us understand the health of your jawbone. Depending on your age or individual risk factors, an oral cancer screening may also be performed.
When combined with proper at-home care, exams and cleanings can be very effective at preventing oral health issues such as periodontal disease and tooth loss.
Why Cleanings and Exams are Important
Maintaining good oral hygiene is not only important in helping you achieve a more attractive, beautiful smile, but also in helping you maintain good overall health. While daily brushing, flossing, and general at-home care is a crucial part of maintenance, these at-home habits and routines are not always effective at removing plaque from hard-to-reach areas. When these areas go untreated, the buildup of bacteria can begin to affect the health of your gums. As a result, the onset of more serious oral health conditions such as periodontal disease can begin to impact your gums, teeth, and general health. Gum disease has been linked to more severe health issues such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes, cancer, and other deadly diseases.

Too often, when you begin to see the signs and symptoms of periodontal disease, it has already reached a more advanced stage. Our goal during your bi-annual visit is to help eliminate the bacteria and plaque that can cause inflammation and to help you achieve and maintain the healthiest smile possible.
